The JOEY Scout Section is for boys and girls, ages 6 and 7. They enjoy a fun programme of "Caring and Sharing" with games and craft.
The Joey Scouts together are called a "MOB" - how appropriate for this age group!
Joeys are introduced to the award scheme by earning the Adventure badge, Buddy badge, Caring & Sharing badge, Environment badge and finally the Promise Challenge badge. These are earned by participating in activities as a Mob.
We all know that the motto of Scouts is "Be Prepared", you might not know that Joey Scouts have their own motto, "Help Other People".
An adult Leader of the Joey Scout Section is affectionately known after the name of an Australian native animal, such as Bilby, Possum or 'Roo... or even Bunyip...!
The CUB Scout Section is for boys and girls from 7 1/2 to 11 years.
Cubs earn 'Boomerang' badges on three age-based levels- Bronze, Silver & Gold. They can also choose from over 30 Achievement badges to earn, in categories of: Arts & Literature; Nature Science & Technology; Sports & Recreation; and Our World. Cubs strive for the 'Grey Wolf' award.
The structure of Cub Scouts is based on "The Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling: Jointly, Cub Scouts are called a Pack; the adult Leaders are named after characters from the book, such as 'Baloo', 'Bagheera' and the main leader is 'Akela'. Many of Kipling's 'Laws of the Jungle' equate to the Scout Law.
Cub Scouts use the Scout Motto: "Be Prepared" and the Scout Promise but the Cub Scout Law is abbreviated to: "A Cub Scout is loyal and obedient, A Cub Scout does not give in to themself."
The Cub Scout programme, whilst incorporating an award scheme, is founded on having FUN! Cubs are asked to 'Do Your Best' and promise to themselves and each other to 'Do Our Best'. (A former Cub might remember the abbreviation, cried out as "DYB DYB DYB", "DOB DOB DOB".)
The SCOUT Section is for boys and girls from 10 1/2 to 15 years.
The Scout Section is called a 'TROOP'. Adult Leaders are traditionally called 'Skip'.
They strive to achieve the 'Australian Scout Medallian'. On the way, they earn Citizenship, Campcraft, and a 3rd optional badge in 3 levels of Pioneer, Explorer & Adventurer. Scouts can also choose from a variety of Challenge badges. Activities are Patrol based and encourage leadership development.
Scouts develop a sense of community by living up to the Scout Promise and the Scout Law.
It is the adventure of a lifetime! Camping, hiking, abseiling, and canoeing are enjoyed by most Scout Troops, but scouting adventures could even include sailing (common for Sea Scouts), flying, archery, skiing, caving... you name it, you can do it. Some activities are reserved for the next age groups, such as white water rafting, parachuting... hey we can't have Venturers getting jealous of the Scouts!
All Scouts have the opportunity to attend the Australian Jamboree, held every three years. Look for the links on this site to AJ2010.
VENTURERS are young men and women from 14 1/2 to 18 years. Venturers strive toward the 'Queen Scout' award. As teenagers lead busy lives, their pursuits in sport, education, career & other interests all contribute to the award scheme. Venturers often choose to experience Leadership roles by becoming youth helpers in the Joey or Cub Sections.
ROVERS is the Section for young adults from 17 to 26 years, to continue their adventures in Scouting and Community Service.
Many Rovers become Leaders in the Youth Sections while remaining active within their own age group. Rovers strive to earn the 'BP' award.
Adults don't miss out on the Scouting Adventure!
You don't even need to have been a Scout in your youth, to make a valuable contribution to Scouting. Many Scout Leaders start as parents of youth members. Like most clubs: sporting, community or church based, Scout Groups are run by VOLUNTEERS.
Membership of Scout Groups is ever-changing, not only do youth members move up through the Sections and ultimately onward beyond the youth sections, but so do Adult Leaders.
Therefore all Scout Groups are on the look out for new Leaders.
There are Leaders of youth: Leaders in each Section, Assistant Leaders and adult helpers; and there are Leaders of Adults: Group Leaders, District Leaders and Trainers.
Please go to the 'Positions Vacant' page for more info on becoming a Scout Leader. There is also more info on the Scouts Australia website, click the link at the top of our home page.
